Angela Bassett Joins GREEN LANTERN

Variety is reporting that Angela Bassett has joined the cast of Warner Bros.' "Green Lantern" opposite Ryan Reynolds, Peter Sarsgaard and Mark Strong. She will play Dr. Amanda Waller, a government agent who is a staple of the DC Comics series.

She is a great actress, she will not disappoint anyone.

"Green Lantern" hits theatres June 17, 2011.

Neil Patrick Harris Joins Sony's SMURFS: THE MOVIE

 

Deadline | Hollywood is reporting that Neil Patrick Harris will star in the "Smurfs" movie. According to the site, the Raja Gosnell-directed film is a mix of live action and animation, and Harris is the lead live action character. The film is expected to hit theaters July 29, 2011.

The Smurfs secured their place in North American pop culture in 1981, when the Saturday-morning cartoon The Smurfs, produced by Hanna-Barbera Productions in association with SEPP International S.A., aired on NBC from 1981 to 1989. The show became a major success for NBC, spawning spin-off television specials on an almost yearly basis. SPIDER-MAN 4 Postponed

Variety is reporting that a source from Sony Pictures has confirmed that the studio is postponing production on the fourth installment of its superhero franchise, which was scheduled to begin lensing in February. Word began circulating among fanboys in mid-December that pre-production had ground to a halt on "Spidey 4" due to script problems with the Sam Raimi-helmed tentpole. At the time, the studio insisted that crew members were merely taking a two-week Christmas break.

Sony still has "Spidey 4" skedded for May 6, 2011, though that date has become highly unlikely.

STAR TREK 2 Sequel Script in the Works and Pre-Production Starts in 2010

 
Zoe Saldana (Star Trek, Avatar) said while talking to MTV, that a script is in the works for "Star Trek 2".

MTV interview: "I spoke to J.J. and Bryan Burk, his producing partner at Bad Robot, and they are still in the middle of building the script with Alex Kurtzman and Bob Orci, and we'll probably be going into pre-production around this time next year."

THE FIRST AVENGER: CAPTAIN AMERICA Starts Filming in June 2010

 

Fangoria had an interview with film director Joe Johnston (Jurassic Park III and The Rocketeer) regarding "The Wolfman". He spilled the beans in reagrds to production of the "The First Avenger: Captain America". movie, which is expected to hit theaters July 22, 2011.

Here is an excerpt:

Principal photography was now less than four weeks away. “By the time I got on a plane and arrived, it was three,” recalls Johnston, speaking from the art department of THE FIRST AVENGER: CAPTAIN AMERICA, which he’s readying for a June start. “But at that point, what kind of difference can a week make?”

"Transformers 3" Opens July 1, 2011

Well its official: We have a great Transformers 3 story. The release date is now July 1st 2011. Not 2012.

Today is Day One. This morning started with an ILM meeting for five hours in San Francisco. Currently I'm flying with writer Ehren Kruger to Rhode Island to talk to Hasbro about new characters.

"Spider-Man 4" in IMAX on May 5, 2011

According to a press release via Reuters, "Spider-Man 4" will be hitting IMAX on May 5, 2011.

"The last two Spider-Man releases have been available in IMAX theaters, and
we're very much looking forward to our return to a wider IMAX theatre network
with this exciting new chapter in the continuing adventures of Spider-Man," said
Rory Bruer, President, Worldwide Distribution for Sony Pictures Releasing. "The
addition of so many new IMAX locations will give even more fans of Spider-Man an
opportunity to experience the action and adventure in a unique way."

"Spider-Man continues to be one of the world's most popular motion picture
franchises, and we are very excited to include the latest chapter as part of our
2011 slate," said IMAX CEO Richard L. Gelfond. "Our network has grown
significantly and we continue to roll-out new theatres virtually every week,
giving more moviegoers the opportunity to experience the movie in IMAX."

"We're so excited to once again work with our friends at Columbia Pictures, Sony

J.J. Abrams Talks "Star Trek 2"

The Los Angeles Times caught up with director J.J. Abrams about "Star Trek 2".....the film is expected to hit theaters Summer 2011. Here's an excerpt:

Abrams spoke about the general creative imperatives for the story while Orci hinted that we might be seeing clear metaphors for modern geo-political concerns in the story about ongoing mission of the Starship Enterprise. First, here's what Abrams told me:

"The ambition for a sequel to 'Star Trek' is to make a movie that's worthy of the audience and not just another movie, you know, just a second movie that feels tacked on. The first movie was so concerned with just setting up the characters -- their meeting each and galvanizing that family -- that in many ways a sequel will have a very different mission. it needs to do what [the late 'Trek' creator Gene] Roddenberry did so well, which is allegory. It needs to tell a story that has connection to what is familiar and what is relevant. It also needs to tell it in a spectacular way that hides the machinery and in a primarily entertaining and hopefully moving story. There needs to be relevance, yes, and that doesn't mean it should be pretentious. If there are simple truths -- truths connected to what we live -- that elevates any story -- that's true with any story."   

Here's what Orci had to say:

"We’ve literally had two meetings now. We haven’t decided anything but we’re starting to circle around some ideas. We got a lot of fan response from the first one and a considerable amount of critical response and one of the things we heard was, ‘Make sure the next one deals with modern-day issues.’ We’re trying to keep it as up-to-date and as reflective of what’s going on today as possible. So that’s one thing, to make it reflect the things that we are all dealing with today.

Confirmed is the title for the fourth "Pirates of the Caribbean" film: "On Stranger Tides". In theaters sometime in the summer of 2011. Johnny Depp is slated to return as Captain Jack Sparrow.

"Mission Impossible IV" Expected to Release in 2011

Still a long wait before "Mission Impossible IV" hits theaters....

Variety reports that "Mission: Impossible IV," which once seemed truly impossible, is taking shape at Paramount.

Tom Cruise and J.J. Abrams have agreed to co-produce the sequel, which is aimed at a 2011 release.

The return of Cruise to Par itself is surprising in view of the circumstances surrounding his departure in August 2006. Apparently irked by the heft of Cruise’s deal, among other issues, Viacom chief Sumner Redstone abruptly terminated the 14-year relationship between the star and the studio. Cruise’s then-CAA agent, Rick Nicita, termed Redstone’s decision “shockingly offensive and graceless.”

The rift led to Cruise becoming the chief of United Artists and taking a more active role in production decisions. Redstone, meanwhile, has sought to heal the relationship. At a recent appearance, he described the star as “a great actor and a good friend.”

The “Mission” installment would augment Paramount’s formidable array of sequels, which will include “Star Trek 2” and a third “Transformers.”
